The Cairns Airport Adventure Festival is back this year to host one of the biggest triathlon events in the world: IRONMAN. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Cairns in Far North Queensland, IRONMAN gathers the best triathletes from all over the world to compete in a challenging triathlon event that has become one of the most famous in the world. As well as IRONMAN, the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival will bring with it a number of triathlon events that all ages and levels can take part in. Five exciting events are on the lineup this year including the world-famous IRONMAN, IRONMAN 70.3, Quicksilver Reef Swim, The Cairns Post Bright Night Run, and the McDonald’s IRONKIDS Cairns Triathlon.
IRONMAN is all set to be the big highlight once again, which sees competitors race it out on a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km run along the Captain Cook Highway from Cairns all the way to Port Douglas. It’s both a physical and mental challenge, and is known for being one of the most prestigious triathlon events in the world. This triathlon is most famous for its stunning backdrop, which provides its competitors a course through World Heritage-listed rainforest as well as the Great Barrier Reef.
For those that want to challenge themselves to a lighter version of the IRONMAN there’s the IRONMAN 70.3, which cuts the distances in half with a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike ride, and 21.1 km run. The Quicksilver Reef Swim is the main swimming event of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, featuring 1.5 and 3 km distances taking place at the Great Barrier Reef’s Green Island. All runners are also welcome to take part in the Cairns Post Night Run, featuring a glowing party-inspired course along the Cairns foreshore! And for kids that want to experience triathlon, the McDonald's IRONKIDS Cairns Triathlon will return again with a IRONKIDS finishers t-shirt and several prizes up for grabs.
