Enjoy the timeless tale of one of the longest running musicals of all time. The Cairns Choral Society presents Phantom of the Opera. Led by Directors Joanne Wright and Venera Walsh, the talented team brings to life the memorable songs.
Phantom of the Opera is the tale of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, holding a reign of terror over its occupants. He falls madly in love with an innocent young chorus dancer, Christine, and devotes himself to nurturing her extraordinary talents by exerting his strange sense of control.
The Cairns Choral Society will sing well-loved songs from the musical including “Angel of Music”, “Music of the Night”, “Think of Me”, and the title song “Phantom of the Opera”.
Gaston Leroux, the versatile French author who created The Phantom of the Opera, was a man with an abiding passion for the theatre. Admittedly, it has taken the magic of the cinema, and the art of the dramatists to familiarize the public with The Phantom of the Opera, but Leroux also managed to capture in his pages the atmosphere of the times he was writing about – the latter part of the nineteenth century when France was rampant with belief in the supernatural and the spirit world.
